Mated Pair

Morpheus & Morgana

Species: Harris Hawks

Ages: Morpheus (6 years) Morgana (4 years old)

Region: Sonoran Desert Natives

Misc: Morpheus is the oldest bird on the Sonoran Desert Falconry team.

Acquisition: Both captive bred

Morpheus and Morgana hunted together one full season in the McDowell Sonoran Desert Preserve. They are the hunting team featured in the OZY magazine story, Rare Queen in the Sport of Kings, done on Sonoran Desert Falconry co-founder Tiffany M. White. They have been bonding all this time, however, Morgana has only recently reached sexual maturity. Over the years they’ve established a very strong pair-bond. They were once temporarily separated so Morpheus could work on an agricultural project, however, he rejected this proposition by refusing to eat until being returned to his chamber with Morgana. Morpheus is the smaller of the two hawks in the picture on the left, notice the sizable difference in the female! Morgana weighs nearly 3 lbs.

Harris hawks nest twice per year. The year 2021 will be Morpheus and Morgana’s 2nd nesting attempt. Their history is as follows:

Spring 2019 – Morgana laid one egg that was not fertilized by Morpheus.

Spring 2020 – After extensive courting and propagation, Morgana laid 3 eggs. She was allowed to incubate these eggs with no interruption. They were all infertile.

Fall 2020 – They did not attempt to mate (still young)

Dear Sponsors!

Our birds are like an extension of our family. They live at our residences and their care is a big part of our every day lives. By sponsoring a member of our team you can help us pay for their reoccuring costs which are food, medical care, supplies, and housing maintence. This is the heart of our operation. By helping us with these expenses it brings us one step closer to bringing more programs to the community!
