Wolves of the Sky

Harris’ Hawk

Scientific name: Parabuteo unicinctus
Native to the Southwestern United States through Mexico and as far south as Argentina, the Harris’ hawk is right at home in the Sonoran Desert. Their social temperment and ease of training make them the ideal working bird, favored by falconers all over the world, paricularly those in warmer climates. The Harris’ hawk is the only bird of prey that hunts in packs, which is how they earned the nickname wolves of the sky. Matriarchal, meaning led by an alpha female, these packs vary in size and are typically comprised of members of their own family, so they retain young to help hunt and care for the upcoming clutches. They are truly a unique and amazing bird to witness in the wild.

Peruvian

Aplomado Falcon

Scientific name: Falco femoralis

Once common to the grasslands of the Southwestern United States, The Northern Aplomado Falcon is now an endangered species. These birds can be found in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas (through reintroduction). In falconry, the peruvian subspecies of the Aplomado Falcon is what you see being employed in falconry based bird abatement and of course the hunting sport. This closely related cousin is being bred successfully by falconers all over the country and is being flown with a great deal of success. The project to reintroduce the Northern Aplomado falcon by the Peregrine fund has yielded some promising results for the future of these beautiful desert birds.
